Let’s begin with the basics, shall we?

What is Wicca?

Contrary to some popular beliefs, Wicca is a very peaceful faith and a harmonious, balanced, way of living, which is also based on some ancients traditions dating from long before Christianity and other religions. In fact, some ancient cave paintings can be traced back to the Paleolithic era, where people worshipped a Hunter God and a Fertility Goddess.

Wicca is based around fundamental understandings of nature, appreciation of the sunrise or sunset, the warm breeze that gently blows your face in summer, the cycle of the moon and the glowing moonlight breaching through the forest trees, a meadow enchanted by the first light of day, the colored leafs falling off in autumn through the cold and lonely nights of winter.

Wicca is living by the beauties of our mother earth, feeling and recognizing its energy flowing through us and receiving its gift of nature while appreciating and giving back what should not be taken for granted.

For centuries, the meaning of witchcraft has been mistakenly associated with evil and wrongdoing, and sadly enough, the medieval church of Christianity spread false myths around pagan beliefs in order to scare people and convert them to their religion.

However, the ancient traditions haven’t been forgotten and from those, Wicca was born.

Wicca, Witchcraft, and Paganism, what’s the difference?

Not all Wiccans are witches, however not all witch nor pagans are necessary Wiccans either. It may sound a bit confusing at first, but the truth is it couldn’t be much simpler.

A Witch is someone who practices the many forms of Witchcraft; magick, divination, elemental, ceremonial, and much more, the topic is so large however that we’ll cover it in another article of its own.

The term Pagan simply means having beliefs towards gods or deities that are not from the main world religions. Since most Wiccans believes in either the god and goddess or several other deities or form of entities, we are considered Pagans. There is also the Neopagans, however, we will keep this discussion for another time as well.

Witchcraft is the art of practicing magickal skills and abilities itself, it can hold so many different meaning, especially between cultures, that it is very hard to resume it in a short sentence, for example, voodooism in Africa is a form of witchcraft and growing your own garden could also be one.

In summary, being a witch means practicing a form of witchcraft, being pagan is to believe in some deities other than the most well known and witchcraft is the art of magick itself.
